Recurring lunar observance

Amavasya

The new-moon tithi, observed through distinct family, regional and remembrance traditions.

A quiet calendar marker

Amavasya is associated with the concluding tithi of the dark fortnight. Some communities give particular Amavasyas special significance. Remembrance, charity and household practices differ, so a general introduction should not be substituted for a family’s ritual guidance.

Month labels can differ

Amanta and Purnimanta calendars divide lunar months differently. An identical astronomical interval can therefore appear with different month labels. Always read the displayed convention alongside a date, and use an approved observance rule when ritual timing is needed.

Date and puja timings are awaiting approved festival rules. This guide does not provide an occurrence date. Editorial review pending.
